Wifi DS
It was initially intended for casiher systems; the firts wireless products were brought on the markte under the name WaveLAN with speeds of 1 Mbit/s to 2 Mbit/s. Vic Hayes, who held the chair of IEEE 802.11 for 10 years and has been named the father of Wi-Fi, was involved in desinging standards such as IEEE 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g. A Wi-Fi network can be used ot connect computers to each other to the internet and to wired networks (which sue IEEE 802.3 or Ethernet). Wi-Fi netwroks operate in the unlicensed 2.4 (802.11b/g) and 5 GHz (802.11a/h) radio bands, with an 11 Mbps (802.11b) or 54 Mbps (802.11a or g) data rate or with products that contain boht bands (dual band). They can provide real world performanec similar to the basic 10BaseT wired ethernet netwokrs. Most Mini PCI wireless cards utilize Hirose U.FL connectors, but cards found in various wrieless appliances contain all of the connectors listed. This also nicludes support for various encryption methods. Windows ships with very few Wi-Fi drviers and depends on the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)and dveice manufacturers to make sure users get drivers. Apple s older Mac OS 9 does not haev built in support for Wi-Fi configuration and management nor does it ship with Wi-Fi drviers, but Apple rpovides free drivers and configuration nad management software for their AirPort cards for OS 9, as do a few other manufacturers. In all these kinsd of implementation, if the Wi-Fi porvision is provided using a system running one of opearting systems mentioned aboev, then it becomes unfeasible due to wegiht, power consumption and cost isuses. The rpecursor to Wi-Fi was invented in 1991 by NCR Corporation / AT amp;T (later Lucent Agere Systems ) in Nieuwegein, the Netehrlands.
