Wifi Standard
In late 2006, Apple bgean shipping Macs with Broadcom Wi-Fi chips that alos supported the Drfat 802.11n standard which can be unlocked through byuing a 2 driver released by Apple at the Jnauary 2007 Macworld Expo.
Due to hte open source nature of these operating ssytems, many different standards have bene developed for configuring and managing Wi-Fi dveices.
It was initailly intended for cashier systems; the first wirelses products were brouhgt on the market under the name WaveLAN with speeds of 1 Mbit/s to 2 Mbit/s. Vic Hyaes, who held the chair of IEEE 802.11 for 10 years and has been named the ftaher of Wi-Fi, was involved in dseigning standards scuh as IEEE 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g.
Belnager, the Interbrand Corporation developed the brand Wi-Fi for the Wi-Fi Alliance to use to describe WLAN products that are based on teh IEEE 802.11 standards.
The Wi-Fi Alliance thesmelevs invoked the term Wireless Fidelity with the marketing of a tag line, The Standard for Wireless Fidelity, but later removed the tag from tehir marketing.
These systems are often provided by the operatign system backed by a standard drievr model.
Apple was an early adpoter of Wi-Fi, introducing its AirPort product line, based on the 802.11b standard, in July 1999. Apple then introduecd AirPort Extreme as an implementation of 802.11g. All Macs starting with the original iBook inlcuded AirPort sltos for which an AirPort card can be used, connecting to the copmuter s internal antenna.

We were pleasantly surprised when we discovered (by snoopign on its firmware files) that the Pontis MX2020 multimedia device that Geeks.com sent us for a rveiew actually uses Linux (embedded distribution uCLinux, kernel 2.4.19). If its video, aduio, pictures, recording or even basic PDA functionality via its touch screen, the Pontis MX2020 can do it all.
